H I S T O R Y

Alex was born as the second child to the Hartline family, three years after his elder brother Jonah was brought into the world. Their father, a member of the military police, and their mother, a housewife, seemed to hold the family together with very little effort; father brought home the money, his mother kept the house clean, and the boys helped around the house. Childhood was grand, and very little excitement happened much to the irritation of two growing boys who had adventure on their minds.

When Jonah turned eighteen, he left home to travel the world. Letters came every few weeks talking about this place or that, leaving Alex to ache to get out and explore on his own. After a year and a half, the letters stopped coming, and it was simply as if Jonah Hartline had never existed. Alex sent letters to the inns where Jonah had sent the letters from, but all the letters he received in return stated they've never seen the boy since. This simply spurred the burning need for Alex to get into the world, because now he was dead-set on trying to find his brother.

Funny thing about life, it doesn't always work out the way you plan. Instead of rushing into the world to find his brother, he found himself signing his life over to ShinRa, partially hoping he'd earn some experience there that would help him on his quest, and partially hoping that he could use their resources to help in his search. He excelled in close-quarters combat, using his speed and agility to his advantage against his opponents, and found himself moving up the ranks over the first few years he was in the service.

Even with his new rank, he never learned anything of his brother. It was a sore spot he very rarely spoke of, when he spoke of his personal life at all. Alex had done a good job keeping himself distanced from the people he worked with -- sure, he could work with a unit of police to finish a mission, but that didn't mean he had to socialize. Thus, over the years there were very few people who could say they were close to Alex.

Nine years after entering into service with ShinRa, Alex received a letter. He was being promoted, and was completely changing departments. Administrative Research would be his new home. Buy a suit, it said.

Life never turns in the direction you expect it to.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Its not so much that Alex is antisocial, it's that he's very cautious about who he gives personal information to. In a world where everyone is looking to get a leg up on someone else, information can be the difference between a promotion and finding yourself on the wrong end up a court martial. Alex keeps his political and emotional feelings to himself, rarely speaking of them save for to a few very trusted friends. He does, however, have very little issue speaking up when he feels a plan may fail or that something has been overlooked.

He can be rather sociable at times, though. Every now and then, when the moon is full and the planets align properly, he'll go out and do something with the rest of his unit. Its during these times when he pushes his personal mission into the back of his mind and truly relaxes for a few hours, letting his mind rest.

Alex is also rather oblivious to any sort of romantic feelings others may have for him. This has, in his past, lead to some interesting falling-outs between himself and others, and even now when he looks back at it he cannot fathom why it was such a big deal. One day he'll figure it out.
